Over time, lips tend to lose their natural fullness, becoming thinner while fine lines deepen and wrinkle around the mouth. Thinning lips can be successfully reversed via hyaluronic acid injections. This molecule is biologically present in the body and rehydrates the lips deep down and restores their volume naturally.
Natural looking results are what matter most: “Being the best version of yourself “ is Doctor Benjamin’s Cozanet’s guiding principle.
What can Hyaluronic Acid do for your Lips?
How Do Our Lips Age?
As we age, lip skin changes, drying out, thinning out and losing its natural fullness and shape, while fine vertical lines appear giving a “creased” look across the entire white roll of the lip, often referred to as “smokers’ lines”, “sun pleats” or “barcode lines”.
Lips are particularly vulnerable to the aging process, to premature dehydration, to sun exposure and to cigarette smoking. They are subjected to frequent muscle contractions which accelerate the degradation phenomenon around the vermilion lip border.
Even prior to the aging of the mouth, it’s possible to plump up lips which are too thin or naturally non-existent.
Hyaluronic acid naturally treats lips and combats the effects of aging while correcting imperfections in both men and women.
All-Around Benefits:
-
Redefinition and volumization of the lip area during the thinning and aging process
-
Plumps up the red lip
-
Restores volume to a mouth that’s too thin
-
Smooths out vertical lines around the mouth.
-
Reshapes the cupid’s bow and the philtrum ridges
-
Lifts the drooping corners of the mouth
Some people are born with naturally thin lips while others develop thin lips over time because of cigarette smoking or excessive sun exposure. In all cases, hyaluronic acid injections plump up lip volume, hydrate lips and get rid of fine vertical lines around the mouth.
Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that is widely used in aesthetic medicine. It is a substance found in our joints, eyes and skin. Hyaluronic acid captures water and retains it in the layers of the dermis providing moisture and yielding a soft, supple, smooth and naturally velvety texture to the skin.
Hyaluronic acid helps to:
-
Improve skin quality and treat fine lines and wrinkles in the perioral region.
-
Plump up lip volume when injected deep down into the lip.
Which types of hyaluronic acid lip injections are right for you?
Hyaluronic acid used for lips and the perioral zones must be specially formulated to better resist to degradation during the aging process and to guarantee natural and long-lasting results.
There are now different types of hyaluronic acid that are highly specific depending on the natural correction you’re looking for:
- one that reshapes the lip contour (to enhance the curl, definition, line and shape of the lips.)
- one that helps reshape the philtrum (the fleshy zone between the upper lip and the nose) and the Cupid’s bow.
- one that rehydrates and subtly plumps without volumizing
- one that treats the oral commissures to restore a more attractive mouth by lifting the lip corners and correcting lip asymmetry.
For Dr Benjamin Cozanet, hyaluronic acid lip treatments must respect an aesthetic harmony between the heights of the upper lip and the lower lip, as well as a 1-2 mm receding of the upper lip in relation to the lower lip for a more natural and harmonious result which will last between 9 and 12 months.
The hyaluronic acid injection procedure: Step-by-Step Insight
Before:
Dr Benjamin Cozanet begins the process by removing makeup, cleansing and disinfecting the targeted area before he makes any injections. The needles used for these injections are very thin, the size limits the risk of hematoma and minimizes tissue damage and trauma.
During:
To treat perioral wrinkles, Dr Benjamin Cozanet will make several tiny injections around the mouth, and once the product is injected, he then massages the zone to smooth the distribution of the hyaluronic acid and ensure its appropriate placement and absorption.
Post:
Following the session, lips can be slightly swollen for 24 to 72 hours maximum. Don’t make any plans during this time interval. Dr Benjamin Cozanet will refrain from performing any injections if you have any major events in the next 48 hours.
The presence of the anesthesia(lidocaine) within the hyaluronic acid gel limits the pain throughout the injection process. If a patient is particularly sensitive, it is possible to apply numbing cream prior to the session to reduce any discomfort.
What happens after hyaluronic acid lip injections?
Post-hyaluronic acid lip injections, some redness or a slight edema(swelling) may appear at the injection points.
These post-session effects can easily be camouflaged by applying the right makeup and will disappear within a few days. You can also ice your lips to minimize the sensations of tightness or swelling and reduce the impact of the injections.
Upon completion of the session, you can immediately resume your usual activities without any social downtime.
A follow-up appointment will be scheduled 10-15 days after the injection process so that Dr Benjamin Cozanet can monitor and evaluate the results and perform any necessary touch-ups to perfect the final lip and mouth outcome.
Patients should not hesitate to reach out if they experience any problems, or if the side effects should persist. Dr Benjamin Cozanet will gladly meet with you to investigate the problems or concerns. Patient follow-up and satisfaction remain his number one priority.
Hyaluronic Acid Lip Injection Combo Therapies : Working Together
Lip correction can be combined with the correction of the perioral zone, including the treatment of bitterness folds (labiomental groove) which extend from the corners of the mouth toward the chin, filling the nasolabial folds to visibly rejuvenate the lower face zone or add volume and definition to a receding chin.
In certain cases, it may be possible to reshape the facial oval area via hyaluronic acid injections, and in other cases via Ultherapy Prime® (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) or even EMFACE®.
A smoothing fractional CO2 laser can also be used for certain above upper lip wrinkles or around the mouth, sometimes extending to the chin and cheeks, for which a radiofrequency and microneedling combo treatment can also be proposed.
By alternating hyaluronic acid injections with photorejuvenation lasers, this combo wrinkle treatment stimulates collagen synthesis to improve skin texture and skin aging pigmentation, and also restores skin radiance.
Certain peeling treatments (glycolic acid or TCA) can also be prescribed and sometimes combined with LED chromo stimulation.
