The term Peel comes from the English verb “to peel”. Aging skin loses its glow and becomes dull over time.

Pigmentation spots and fine lines appear, skin loses firmness becoming saggy and wrinkled.

A wide variety of skin peels exist, depending on the dermic and epidermic depth they target, improving all signs of aging on facial skin, neck, hand and decolletage (firmness depletion, age spots and fine lines).

Skin is regenerated by stimulating collage and elastin synthesis, bringing forth new and fresh skin to the surface.

Dr Benjamin Cozanet, an aesthetic MD in the 1st district of Paris, will help you find the right skin peel, which is best suited to you and your skin profile.  You’re never too young nor too old to give your skin a fresh start!

What is a superficial skin peel?

A superficial skin peel gives you a glowing and healthy complexion: skin brightens, age spots fade away and pores are tightened, skin looks less oily. The peel’s active ingredients act at the epidermic level, eliminating the stratum corneum layers of the skin which accumulate, and accelerating epidermal cellular renewal.

It is often made of glycolic acid (sugar cane extract) and other varying components or fruit acid combos, depending on the skin type and desired results.

It can equally be performed with low concentration trichloroacetic acid (15%). For optimal results, Dr Benjamin Cozanet recommends 4 sessions, spaced 15 days apart. No social downtime is required, some redness may appear for a few hours, which is easily concealed by makeup.

What is a medium skin peel?

The medium peel’s core active ingredient is trichloroacetic acid with concentrations ranging from 15% to 18% or 25%.

Dr Benjamin Cozanet’s treatment protocol is 1-3 sessions, spaced 1 month apart, if necessary and according to your skin profile.

It targets age-affected skin: creased, dull skin with blemishes and wrinkles.

3-5 days of social downtime are necessary for satisfactory and durable results, since skin will peel or flake more than with a superficial peel, to regenerate at a deeper level.

What is a deep skin peel?

The core active ingredient in a deep skin peel is phenol, with varying concentrations and formulations: it’s the optimal skin peel choice for perioral wrinkles, when hyaluronic acid, Skinbooster or Radiesse® (hydroxylapatite de Calcium), Sculptra®, HarmonyCa® injections, or Radiofrequency with microneedling or Ultherapy Prime® cannot completely erase the “wrinkled” skin appearance and fine lines on the lower eyelid.

The phenol peel is reserved for highly sun-damaged skin, or for skin deeply affected by cigarette smoking, alcohol (heliodermatitis) but also acne scars.

The phenol skin peel provokes a peeling of the epidermal skin layer, and part of the dermis in 6-8 days, you can apply makeup in 8-12 days, depending on the desired results. Social downtime is longer, and the post-peel aftercare must be performed rigorously. This is an aggressive skin peel which necessitates an excellent rapport between patient and medical provider. The results are excellent, but the side effects must be carefully managed for 7- 15 days.

A full facial phenol skin peel must be performed under general anesthesia in an operating room by a surgeon.

With deep skin peels, expect 1- several weeks of social downtime, depending on the skin’s damage and the expected results.

Dr Benjamin Cozanet can refer you to a skilled specialist, should you decide to opt for a deep phenol skin peel.

Skin Peels: Your Step-By-Step Guide

Dr Benjamin Cozanet performs a full skin diagnosis and will help you decide, according to your expectations and skin type, the skin peel which is best suited to your profile.

After prepping the skin by applying specific creams day and night at home for 15 days, Dr Benjamin Cozanet applies the peel on your skin (superficial or medium) with a small brush.

A mild tingling sensation may be experienced during the session which is moderated by an adapted ventilation system. After a few minutes, the peel is neutralized by a special cream and the skin is rinsed with cold water, after which a soothing cream is applied.

Some minor redness can persist for a few hours, but makeup can be applied as of the end of the session.

For 3 days, you then apply a hydrating and repairing cream to protect, repair and soothe your skin immediately after the peel. After this 3-day period, you can then resume the prep protocol until your next peel appointment (4 sessions spaced 15 days to 3 weeks apart).

How long do skin peel results last?

The skin peel kickstarts the skin’s cellular activity and the effects last 3 months after the completion of the peel protocol. The results are permanent since it triggers a natural mechanism, inducing physiological processes of skin reparation.

Dr Benjamin Cozanet recommends renewing the process every year, a new series of skin peels to combat skin aging over time.

The results depend on the number of sessions and the type of skin peel.

From a healthy glow to controlling oily skin, the skin peel can also smooth out signs of aging and treat age spots. In all cases, results can be extended by using adapted skincare.
