Laser Therapy for Wrinkles

CO2 lasers are ablative lasers, which have been used for the last 25 years in medical and aesthetic medicine. They “scrape” and destroy the targeted tissues. The results are excellent, but the after-effects are severe (general anesthesia, bandages, redness and oozing for several weeks after…)

Today, thanks to advanced technology, it is now possible to fractionate laser treatment, meaning to diffuse it in such a way as to preserve areas of healthy skin on the treated surface. The anesthesia thus become useless (maybe a local cream application) and there is no more social downtime (light side-effects for up to 1 week).

Also, beyond its purely ablative effect which vaporizes skin tissue through a photothermic effect, the CO2 laser heats the tissue deep down which generates a tissue tightening mechanism through photocoagulation and stimulates collagen synthesis in the dermis.  

The fractional CO2 laser is recommended to treat fine lines, wrinkles and scars.

The Treatment

Avoid sun exposure 1 month prior to treatment and photosensitizing medication.

An anesthesia cream can be applied 2 hours prior to the laser session and renewed every 15 minutes.

Pain may occur at the end of the session and for the first few days. It feels like a diffuse heat or burning throughout the treated zone. An antalgic prescription will be provided.

Some redness, swelling and oozing can be observed. This will necessitate a carefully controlled scarring process protocol for 8 days. Bandages will be applied until the scar healing process is complete, within 10-15 days, according to the treatment zone.

Fatty based bandages will be applied and renewed every hour to hydrate the treatment zone and until scabs disappear completely. Afterwards, a moisturizing cream will be prescribed day and night for 15 days. Broad spectrum sunscreen is a MUST for the 12 weeks following the session. 

The treatment includes 2-4 sessions, and results are visible as of 3-4 weeks. Sessions are spaced 6-8 weeks apart. 

Combo Therapies

In the case of more severe wrinkling or for a full facial preventative or aging treatment, it is possible to combine photorejuvenation laser with a more targeted treatment like hyaluronic acid injections or SkinBoosters, or Radiesse®, or HarmonyCa®, or Sculptra®.
